While planning our road trip back from Tongariro National Park back to Auckland, we were looking for a cozy spot to stop for a couple of nights. That’s how we stumbled upon Raglan, a tiny, laid-back town on the west coast of the North Island. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this little bohemian haven, but we absolutely fell in love with it!

Known for its legendary surf breaks and effortlessly chill vibe, Raglan feels like stepping into a postcard of rolling green hills, black-sand beaches, and creative energy. We booked two nights… and honestly, we could have stayed much longer. The town has that perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and stunning natural beauty. And after three days of full-on rain at the Tongariro where we couldn’t see/do much, it was sunny, which was a big plus for us!
Here are some of the best things to do in Raglan:

Bridal Veil Falls (Waireinga)
Just a 20-minute drive out of town, Bridal Veil Falls is an absolute must-visit. This stunning 55-meter waterfall cascades beautifully into a lush pool below, surrounded by native bush.

The walk is easy overall but be prepared for quite a few stairs on the descent to the base. It’s a breeze going down, but the climb back up gets the legs working! The views are incredible, and the drive there winds through gorgeous rolling hills that make the whole trip feel scenic.

Surfing at Manu Bay and Ngarunui Beach
If you’re into surfing (or just love watching it), Raglan is paradise. Manu Bay (also called “The Point”) is world-famous for its long, peeling left-hand breaks, one of the best point breaks you’ll find anywhere. Even if you’re not paddling out, it’s mesmerising to watch the surfers carve along the waves against the dramatic cliffs.

Ngarunui Beach (the main beach) is more beginner-friendly and great for a relaxed surf session or just dipping your toes in.

The surf culture here is so laid-back, you’ll see boards everywhere and feel that true bohemian energy.

Lying on a Black-Sand Beach at Ngarunui
Ngarunui Beach isn’t just for surfing. Its dark, volcanic black sand feels unique underfoot, and the wide stretch is perfect for lazy beach days. Bring a picnic, or just stretch out and listen to the waves.

Drive Up to Te Toto Gorge Lookout
The winding, narrow road up to Te Toto Gorge Lookout isn’t for the faint-hearted. It’s steep and gravelly in parts, but oh wow, the payoff is worth it! At the top, you’re rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramic views over rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and endless ocean. It’s one of those spots that makes you feel tiny in the best way.

Walk the Three Bridges
A super easy, scenic walk right from town! The Three Bridges Loop connects the main street to the harbor, crossing wooden bridges over estuaries and offering lovely views of boats, mangroves, and the water. It’s a peaceful way to explore Raglan on foot. Perfect for a morning or evening stroll.

Go Wine Tasting at Barrelled Wines, Raglan
Barrelled Wines is the only winery near Raglan, about 40 minutes away on a scenic (and windy!) drive. It’s worth every twist and turn for the incredible ocean views and seriously good wines, think boutique Syrah, Rosé, and more. Check their website ahead to book a tasting or ensure they’re open, as it’s a small, family-run spot.

Watch the Sunset and Just Relax
Raglan is ridiculously picturesque, especially at golden hour. We loved unwinding with a glass of wine and watching the sunset. Our Airbnb had an epic view, but even without that, there are plenty of amazing public spots.

Top picks for sunset include:
- The lookout above Ngarunui Beach (Michael Hope Lookout) sweeping views over the beach and Tasman Sea, often with surfers silhouetted against the colours.
- Manu Bay itself, sit on the rocks and watch the sun “dance” on the waves.
Raglan completely exceeded our expectations. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and chill vibes. If you’re road-tripping the North Island, definitely add it to your itinerary. We left wishing we’d had more time… next visit, we’re staying longer!

Where to Stay in Raglan?
