A Weekend Escape to O’Reilly’s – Lamington National Park

Ever since exploring the stunning Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park, I’ve been itching to visit the park’s lush Green Mountains section. While both areas are part of the same national park, visiting them in one weekend is quite a trek—so despite our best intentions, it took us a while to finally make it to O’Reilly’s. Life has a way of getting in the way, and with so many adventures right here in Southeast Queensland, this one kept slipping down the list.

View from the Python Rock Lookout

Our main motivation for heading to O’Reilly’s was to tick the Toolona Creek Circuit off our hiking bucket list. We booked the trip back in January, excited to finally make it happen. Unfortunately, nature had other plans. The trail has been closed since ex-Cyclone Jasper hit in March, and repairs are still ongoing. We were disappointed, of course—but hey, that’s life in Queensland. Weather does wild things, and the wilderness takes time to heal.

Toolona Creek Circuit or not, our weekend in O’Reilly’s was absolutely magical. From lush rainforest walks and stunning mountaintop views to vibrant birdlife and cosy mountain lodge vibes, this part of Lamington National Park is worth the journey.

Box Forest Circuit

Here’s how to make the most of a weekend escape to O’Reilly’s in the beautiful Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park.

The hiking starts!

The Hikes

This area is a hiker’s paradise, with trails weaving through ancient rainforest, waterfalls, and dramatic escarpment views. Whether you’re after a short stroll or a full-day trek, there’s something for everyone.

Box Log Waterfalls

As mentioned above, we came hoping to do the Toolona Creek Circuit, one of the most popular long walks in this side of the park, but unfortunately it was closed during our visit. When open, this trail is a must-do for waterfall lovers—it winds through dense forest past a dozen cascades and links with the scenic Border Track. We’ll definitely be back when it does re-opens (we were told it should reopen very soon).

Moran’s Falls

Here are the hikes we did manage to explore:

  • Box Forest Circuit – A lush, immersive walk past waterfalls and creeks.
  • Moran’s Falls, Moonlight Crags & Balancing Rock – Shorter trails with incredible views, especially beautiful around sunset.
  • Wishing Tree Track & Python Rock Lookout – Quick, rewarding walks for quieter moments or a gentle afternoon stroll.

If you’re up for a big day, the Border Track is another classic, connecting O’Reilly’s to Binna Burra with sweeping views and deep forest vibes. Do it as a return hike (if you are a super keen hiker, it is over 20kms one way!) or arrange a transfer to make it one-way. O’Reilly’s can organise for a morning drop off to the Binna Burra side. Their current cost is $35. I have added that to our hiking bucket list too!

The Tree Top Walk

Don’t Miss the Tree Top Walk

Wander through the canopy on the iconic Tree Top Walk—a suspended walkway through the rainforest, offering a bird’s-eye view of this incredible ecosystem. If you’re game, climb the wobbly tower at the end for a higher vantage point (not for the faint-hearted!).

Birdlife Galore

O’Reilly’s is heaven for bird lovers. Start your day with the morning bird walk to spot everything from bowerbirds and robins to rosellas, king parrots, and if you’re lucky, even the elusive lyrebird. The birds here are friendly, cheeky, and always photogenic—perfect for wildlife photography lovers!

The bird of prey show

Birds of Prey Show

Another highlight of any visit to O’Reilly’s, if you are a bird lover, is the Birds of Prey show. This incredible presentation lets you get up close with some of Australia’s most magnificent raptors. We watched a graceful barn owl soar just overhead and stood in awe of the majestic eagles showing off their wingspan and hunting skills. It’s a must-see for all ages and a great way to learn more about these incredible birds.

The Sunset

Despite the crisp winter chill—we visited in June—sunset at O’Reilly’s was pure magic. Wrapped up in jackets, drink in hand, we watched the sky melt into gold over the mountains. There’s something peaceful and grounding about the golden-hour glow up here, even if your fingers go a bit numb!

Oh and by the way the sunrise was pretty cool too, if you are an early riser!

Wine & Alpacas in Canungra

O’Reilly’s isn’t just a rainforest retreat—it also owns a beautiful winery/Alpaca farm in Canungra, just down the mountain. Stop in on your way up or down to enjoy wine tasting, a delicious lunch, and a walk with the cutest alpacas!

Where to Stay?

Although you can visit O’Reilly’s just for the day, I would recommend spending at least one night as there is so much to do. Base yourself at the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, which offers everything from camping, mountain-view rooms to self-contained villas. You’ll have easy access to the trails, birdlife, and all the comforts of a cozy lodge—including fireside wine nights and hearty meals.

How to Get to O’Reilly’s

To reach O’Reilly’s, you’ll definitely need a car—and a bit of patience! The drive is an experience in itself. The road winds dramatically through lush rainforest, climbing steadily as the views get better (and the bends sharper). It’s narrow in places and can feel a little nerve-wracking, but it’s also incredibly scenic. With towering trees, glimpses of the valleys below, and even the chance of spotting wildlife enroute, this drive is all part of the adventure. Just take it slow and enjoy the journey!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, photographing parrots, learning about eagles, or simply soaking up the serenity, a weekend at O’Reilly’s is the ultimate escape into nature. We’re already planning our next visit.
